On the Amazon:
Ron and I took a cruise down the Amazon. One of the most amazing sights was seeing the waters from the Amazon and the Rio Negro merge. They call this the black and tan - like the drink, because the waters, where they join, mix together creating a black and tan swirl.
While the name Rio Negro means Black River, its waters aren't exactly black; they are similar in color to tea. This dark color comes from leaves and humus it collects from the tree lined banks. These suspended particles give the river its tea-like appearance. The name arises from the fact that it looks black from afar. I'm sure you can guess - the Amazon is the "tan." That's because it's so muddy!
