The 100% Ideal
by Leslie Brunker
Most of us think about our level of responsibility in relationships as a 100% thing. That when I am in relationship with one person we are each 50% responsible, thereby creating 100% total for the two of us. I am challenging this long-held assumption about the 50/50 concept and would like to suggest that we are really each 100% responsible.
I’ll illustrate my point by the following example: If you are on a team of ten people, are each of you only 10% responsible (adding up to 100%)? In a neighborhood of 100 people, are each of you just 1% responsible? In a community of a thousand, is each person just 1/10% responsible? I think you get my point. The only way accountability works is when we each recognize that we are 100% responsible and live accordingly.
The benefit of acting in such a manner is that we can no longer live in blame or victimhood. We must stand up and be counted for our contribution, and therefore be involved in the solution when things aren’t working at optimal. When things are working well, we can stand up and celebrate, knowing that we contributed to the success as well.
It all starts with one. One person saying, “I take 100% responsibility for my life.” Then another person and then another. When you work on a team of accountable people you can be your most creative, productive selves. Trust gets built and sustained. Soon you have an accountable workplace, an accountable home life, and it builds into an accountable community and world. Go ahead. Stand up and make your claim to being 100% responsible in your life right now. Get ready to see marvelous results.
